Gutter System Options
uPVC Guttering
The most popular choice for most homes. Affordable, easy to maintain, and available in multiple profiles and colours. Modern uPVC is UV-stabilised and typically lasts 20-30 years.
Profiles available:
- Half-round – traditional look, easy to clean
- Square – modern appearance, higher capacity
- Ogee – decorative profile for traditional properties
- Deep flow – high capacity for large roof areas
Seamless Aluminium
Aluminium gutters are formed on-site in continuous lengths, eliminating joints where leaks commonly occur. Available in multiple colours with baked-on finishes that don't peel or fade. More expensive than uPVC but longer-lasting and more elegant.
Cast Iron
Traditional cast iron guttering suits period properties where authenticity matters. Heavy and requires periodic painting but can be repaired and maintained indefinitely. We also install cast-effect aluminium that provides traditional appearance with easier maintenance.
Sizing Your Gutters
Gutters must be sized for your roof area and the rainfall intensity in your location. Bude receives significant rainfall, so adequate capacity is essential. Undersized gutters overflow even when not blocked.
We calculate the effective roof area draining to each gutter run and specify appropriate gutter and downpipe sizes. This is particularly important for large roofs, valley situations, and where multiple roofs drain to single points.
Proper Installation
Correct installation is essential for gutters to function properly:
Fall
Gutters need consistent fall towards outlets – typically 1:350 to 1:600. This ensures water flows to downpipes rather than pooling and overflowing.
Bracket Spacing
Brackets must be close enough to prevent sagging. Maximum spacing depends on gutter type but is typically 600-900mm.
Downpipe Position
Downpipes should be positioned for easy drainage, avoiding windows and doors where possible. We connect to existing drains or install new soakaways as needed.
Joint Sealing
For uPVC systems, joints must be properly sealed to prevent leaks. We use appropriate sealants and ensure push-fit joints are fully home.
Gutter Guards
Gutter guards prevent leaves and debris entering gutters, reducing cleaning frequency and blockage risk. Various types are available:
- Mesh guards – allow water through while blocking debris
- Brush guards – flexible bristles that prevent accumulation
- Solid covers – deflect debris while channeling water
Guards are particularly worthwhile where gutters are near trees or hard to access. They don't eliminate maintenance but significantly reduce it.
